Ore lighting comparison and locations

Let’s talk about the rarity of Adamantite, seriously. Well beyond just that all 3 new Ores in Terraria 1.1 can be a challenge to find so in this article I will address the best practices on how to find them.

In order to even start the search you must have defeated the Wall of Flesh and smashed a Demon Alter with your PwnHammer. Once that simple series of events is completed it’s a just matter of looking for all the new spawned Ores in your world.

To make your search a lot easier you will need to make yourself a boat load of Spelunker Potion. To narrow your search somewhat I have listed out at what layer you are most likely to find the big Ore deposits.

Spelunker Potion

Gold Ore
1 nugget per potion

Moonglow
Only found inside a Jungle biome at night

Blinkroot
Really common, is found anywhere at night.

Bottle of water
Get by crafting while standing near water

World Layers

Currently with patch 1.1 we have 4 layers in our world. Surface, Underground, Caverns and the Underworld. Each one has unique properties about it and its own backdrop to distinguish each from the other.

Cobalt Ore

You can find Colbalt Ore from the Underground layer with its dirt and stone backdrop down starting around 175ft below the Surface layer. This is the most abundant new ore as you might expect and can be found at almost every layer. I’ve found it in small spawns of 2 or 3 blocks too much much larger spawns of 20 or so pieces.

Mythril Ore

Now Mythril is a lot less common and can be found starting around the dept of 1200ft below in the Caverns layer. Spawn sizes vary, I’ve seen deposits as small as 10 blocks and as large as 40 blocks.

Adamantite Ore

1450ft and below is where you will start seeing Adamantite Ore spawns. The depth at which this spawns has a large range but it will never be below the Underworld layer. This stuff is so rare that after a couple of hours of searching I only had enough to make the Adamantite drill. Getting enough for armor isn’t going to be fun. As you can imagine I went through quite a few of my Spelunker potions. A trick to avoid using so many potions I found when near the Underworld layer is to use the very annoying Fire Imp’s fireballs as a peek into whats in an area of rock as their Fireball passes through you and all blocks.

Just wanted to say thanks for the information, although I still get the colors mixed up using the spelunker potion lol. Also, I found some cobalt around 78ft deep, so maybe it has no depth restrictions.
